Carice van Houten is a Dutch actress and singer, best known for her role as Melisandre in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones. She was born on September 5, 1976, in Leiderdorp, Netherlands. Carice grew up in a creative household as her father was a writer and her mother was a professional violinist. She developed a passion for acting at a young age and decided to pursue it as a career. She studied at the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts and graduated in 2000. Her breakthrough came in 2006 when she starred in the critically acclaimed Dutch film Black Book, directed by Paul Verhoeven. Her performance in the film brought her international recognition and she received numerous awards for her portrayal of a Jewish singer during World War II. Carice’s career took off after Black Book, and she went on to star in several successful Dutch films, establishing herself as one of the leading actresses in the Netherlands. In 2012, she gained even more worldwide attention when she was cast as the mysterious Red Priestess, Melisandre, in Game of Thrones.
