Biography

Carroll Baker is an American-born actress, known for her roles in numerous films and television shows throughout the 1950s and 1960s. She was born on May 28, 1931, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Baker showed an early interest in acting and eventually enrolled in the Actors Studio in New York City to further hone her skills. She made her film debut in the drama film Easy to Love in 1953. Her breakthrough role came a few years later when she starred as Baby Doll Meighan in the controversial film Baby Doll (1956), directed by Elia Kazan. Her portrayal in the film earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, establishing her as a rising star in Hollywood. Throughout her career, Baker appeared in a variety of genres, from dramas to westerns and thrillers. Some of her notable films include Giant (1956), alongside James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor, The Big Country (1958), How the West Was Won (1962), and Harlow (1965), where she portrayed the late 1920s and early 1930s Hollywood actress Jean Harlow. Although Baker’s talent was acknowledged, she struggled to maintain her success during the late 1960s, and her film career experienced a decline. However, she transitioned to television and made appearances in popular shows such as Ironside, The Virginian, and Cannon. In the late 1970s, she returned to the big screen by starring in the horror film The Watcher in the Woods (1980). Despite the ups and downs of her career, Baker remains recognized as a talented and influential actress. Her performances were often praised for her ability to bring complexity and depth to her characters. She has received several awards throughout her career, including a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer – Female and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
