Chesa Boudin Biography

Chesa Boudin is an accomplished lawyer, author, and former public defender. Born on August 21, 1980, in New York City, Boudin’s life has been deeply influenced by his family history. His parents, Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert, were members of the Weather Underground, a left-wing revolutionary organization active in the 1970s. Unfortunately, when Boudin was just fourteen months old, his parents were arrested for their involvement in the armored car robbery that resulted in the tragic deaths of two police officers and a security guard. This event drastically changed the course of his life.

Despite the challenges he faced growing up, Chesa Boudin excelled academically and graduated with honors from Yale College in 2003. He then went on to earn a Rhodes Scholarship and studied Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at the University of Oxford. Boudin’s passion for social justice and criminal justice reform led him to pursue a Juris Doctor degree at Yale Law School, which he obtained in 2011. His outstanding academic achievements and dedication to creating a more just society set the foundation for his remarkable legal career.

After completing his studies, Chesa Boudin worked as a deputy public defender in San Francisco. He tirelessly fought for the rights of marginalized individuals, particularly those impacted by the criminal justice system. Boudin’s dedication to his clients and his commitment to progressive reforms caught the attention of the public, ultimately leading him to be elected as San Francisco’s District Attorney in 2019. He became the city’s first progressive District Attorney in its history. As a District Attorney, Boudin continues to advocate for comprehensive criminal justice reforms, focusing on reducing mass incarceration, addressing racial disparities, and supporting restorative justice practices.

Beyond his legal and advocacy work, Chesa Boudin is also a published author. His memoir, titled Gringo: A Coming of Age in Latin America, was published in 2009. In the book, he shares his experiences growing up between the United States and Mexico, exploring themes of family, identity, and cross-cultural understanding. Boudin’s writing showcases his ability to engage readers with his personal narrative while shedding light on important socio-political issues.

Today, Chesa Boudin continues to tirelessly serve the community through his role as San Francisco’s District Attorney.
