Claire Lee Chennault was an American military aviator born on September 6, 1893, in Commerce, Texas. Chennault served as a Brigadier General in the United States Army Air Corps and is best known for his leadership during World War II, particularly as the commander of the famed Flying Tigers. After graduating from Louisiana State University in 1917, Chennault enlisted in the United States Army Signal Corps. He began his aviation career as a pilot during World War I and later became an instructor at an air training center. Chennault’s passion for flying led him to China in 1937, where he served as an advisor to the Chinese Air Force in their conflict against Japanese forces. In 1941, Chennault formed the American Volunteer Group, commonly known as the Flying Tigers. This group of volunteer pilots, known for their distinctive shark-faced aircraft, provided essential air support to the Chinese during World War II. Under Chennault’s command, the Flying Tigers achieved remarkable success, shooting down hundreds of Japanese aircraft.
