Common, born Lonnie Corant Jaman Shuka Rashid Lynn Jr., is an American rapper, actor, and activist. He was born on March 13, 1972, in Chicago, Illinois. Common is known for his thought-provoking lyrics, conscious rap style, and soulful sound that has gained him critical acclaim and widespread recognition in the hip-hop industry. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Common was surrounded by the city’s vibrant rap scene. Inspired by artists like Run-DMC and LL Cool J, he began rapping in high school and quickly gained a local following. In 1992, he released his debut album, Can I Borrow a Dollar?, which showcased his lyricism and storytelling ability. Common’s breakthrough came with his second album, Resurrection in 1994. The album received critical acclaim and established Common as a formidable talent in hip-hop. His introspective and socially conscious lyrics set him apart from many other rappers of his time.
