Cornelis Hendrik Boudewijn Boot, known popularly as Cor Boot, was a Dutch footballer and manager. He was born on December 8, 1920, in Bussum, Netherlands. Boot’s professional football career spanned from 1937 to 1956, during which he played as a forward for various clubs including ‘t Gooi, Ajax, and Vitesse. He was known for his incredible goal-scoring ability and his agility on the field. Boot’s contribution to Dutch football was immense, and he is considered one of the pioneers of the Total Football system.
Boot’s talent was apparent from a young age, and he quickly rose to prominence in the footballing world. He made his professional debut for ‘t Gooi in 1937 at the age of 16. Boot’s impressive performances caught the attention of Ajax, one of the most successful clubs in Dutch football history. He joined Ajax in 1938 and became an integral part of the team that won the Eredivisie title in the following seasons. During his time at Ajax, Boot formed a formidable partnership with striker Piet van Reenen, and together they dominated the Dutch league.
In 1942, Boot’s football career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. Like many other footballers of that time, he was forced to put his playing career on hold and instead joined the resistance against the German occupation of the Netherlands. After the war, Boot resumed his football career and joined Vitesse in 1945. He continued to showcase his goal-scoring prowess, and his performances earned him a call-up to the Dutch national team. He made 14 appearances for the national team, scoring an impressive 10 goals.
After retiring as a player in 1956, Boot transitioned into management. He took up coaching roles at various Dutch clubs, including Vitesse and De Graafschap. However, it was his time at FC Wageningen that truly defined his managerial career. Boot led the club to promotion to the Eredivisie, and his innovative tactics and approach to the game earned him recognition and respect within the football community. He retired as a manager in 1970 and became an influential figure in coaching education, providing guidance and expertise to young coaches.
Cor Boot passed away on November 9, 2005, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Dutch football.
