Craig Ellwood was an American architect best known for his iconic mid-century modern designs. Born Jon Nelson Burke in 1922 in Clarendon, Texas, he adopted the name Craig Ellwood later in life. Ellwood’s interest in architecture sparked during his service in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. After the war, he moved to Los Angeles, where he studied at the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture.
Craig Ellwood’s career took off in the 1950s when he established his own architecture firm. He quickly gained recognition for his innovative designs, characterized by clean lines, open spaces, and large expanses of glass. His work came to define the iconic Southern California modernist architecture of the time. Ellwood’s designs favored simplicity and were greatly influenced by the International Style movement. He believed that architecture should reflect the times it is built in and should be functional yet beautiful.
One of Ellwood’s most famous projects is the Case Study House #16, also known as the The Bridge House. Completed in 1955, this house perfectly showcased Ellwood’s design principles. With its cantilevered beams and glass walls, the house gives the illusion of floating above the ground. It became a symbol of modernist architecture and is now considered a landmark. Throughout his career, Ellwood worked with numerous celebrities and affluent clients, designing exquisite homes and buildings that became architectural icons.
Despite his success, Ellwood faced financial difficulties in the 1960s. He sold his firm and eventually moved to Italy, where he spent the remainder of his career teaching architecture.
