Biography
Danai Gurira is a Zimbabwean-American actress and playwright, best known for her role as Michonne in the hit television series The Walking Dead. She was born on February 14, 1978, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Zimbabwean parents. At the age of five, her family moved back to Zimbabwe, where she spent most of her childhood. Gurira’s interest in acting developed when she was attending high school in Zimbabwe. She joined a drama club and took part in various theater productions, which sparked her passion for performing arts. After completing her education in Zimbabwe, she moved to the United States to pursue a career in acting. In 2004, Gurira made her off-Broadway debut with her play In the Continuum, which she also co-wrote. The play received critical acclaim and was later performed in various countries, including Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. This success brought recognition to Gurira as a talented playwright. Gurira’s breakthrough in the acting world came in 2012 when she joined the cast of The Walking Dead. Her portrayal of the fierce and resourceful Michonne quickly made her a fan favorite. She became known for her strong, empowering female characters and her impressive sword-fighting skills.
