Biography

Dolores Costello, born on September 17, 1903, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was an American silent film actress and the mother of legendary actor John Barrymore Jr. She began her career in the entertainment industry at a young age, following in the footsteps of her father, actor Maurice Costello, and her aunt, actress Helene Costello. Costello’s breakthrough came in 1926 when she starred in the film The Johnstown Flood, which brought her critical acclaim and catapulted her into stardom. Known for her natural beauty, enchanting eyes, and remarkable talent, she swiftly became one of the most sought-after actresses of her time. Throughout the late 1920s and early 1930s, Costello appeared in numerous films, including Napoleon’s Barber (1928), Expensive Women (1931), and Parnell (1937). However, her most famous role came in 1928 when she portrayed both the mother and daughter characters in the film The Younger Generation, receiving immense praise for her dual performance. Unfortunately, as the silent film era came to an end, Costello found herself struggling to transition into the new era of talkies due to a partially speaking voice caused by a childhood throat infection. Nevertheless, she persevered by taking on supporting roles in films such as This is the Army (1943) and Hullabaloo (1940). In 1939, Dolores Costello decided it was time to retire from the film industry to focus on her personal life. She married John Barrymore in 1928, and although they divorced in 1935, they remained close friends and co-parents to their son, John Barrymore Jr. Even though Costello’s film career was relatively short-lived, her impact on the entertainment industry remains significant. She will always be remembered as a talented actress and a silent film icon, contributing to the golden era of cinema with her mesmerizing performances. Dolores Costello passed away on March 1, 1979, in Fallbrook, California, leaving behind a legacy of grace, beauty, and timeless artistry.
