Biography

Dorothy Lamour, born as Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton on December 10, 1914, was an American actress and singer who achieved great popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. She is best known for her roles in the exotic adventure films of the time, particularly her role as the beautiful, sarong-clad love interest in the popular Road to… movie series alongside Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Lamour was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised in a middle-class family. She began her career in the entertainment industry as a singer, performing in nightclubs and theaters. Her talent caught the attention of Hollywood producers, and she was signed to a contract by Paramount Pictures in 1936. Her breakthrough role came in 1937 when she starred opposite Crosby and Hope in The Big Broadcast of 1938. Her enchanting beauty and sultry voice captivated audiences, establishing her as a rising star in Hollywood. Throughout the next decade, Lamour continued to appear in numerous successful films, including Aloma of the South Seas (1941) and The Hurricane (1937), for which she received critical acclaim. Beyond her on-screen roles, Lamour also showcased her vocal abilities through numerous hit records and successful radio appearances. In fact, she earned a Gold Record for her rendition of The Moon of Manakoora from the film The Hurricane. During World War II, Lamour actively participated in entertaining American troops as part of the United Service Organizations (USO). She traveled extensively, visiting military bases and hospitals, earning the affectionate nickname of The Darling of the AEF (American Expeditionary Forces). Lamour’s efforts to support the troops earned her the respect and admiration of many. As the golden age of Hollywood began to fade, Lamour transitioned into television and theater, showcasing her versatility as a performer. She made guest appearances in popular television shows like The Love Boat and Hart to Hart. Dorothy Lamour’s unique combination of beauty, talent, and charisma cemented her status as a beloved icon of her time. Her contribution to the film industry, as well as her commitment to supporting the armed forces, left an indelible legacy. She passed away on September 22, 1996, at the age of 81, leaving behind a remarkable career that continues to inspire and entertain audiences.
