Biography

Ella Fitzgerald, born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia, was an iconic American jazz singer and songwriter. Fondly known as the First Lady of Song, she had a mesmerizing vocal range and an extraordinary ability to improvise and scat. Fitzgerald’s early life was difficult, as she grew up in poverty and faced several challenges. Orphaned at a young age, she was sent to live with her aunt in Harlem, New York. It was in Harlem where her love for music blossomed. At the age of 17, Fitzgerald performed in the renowned Apollo Theater’s amateur night contest, and her soulful rendition of Judy earned her the first place. In 1935, Fitzgerald’s career took a significant turn when she joined the Chick Webb Orchestra. She became the lead vocalist of the band and recorded several hit songs, including the classic A-Tisket, A-Tasket. Following Webb’s death in 1939, Fitzgerald embarked on her solo career, signing with Decca Records. Throughout her career, Ella Fitzgerald collaborated with numerous jazz legends, including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra. Her extraordinary vocal talents garnered her immense popularity and critical acclaim, making her a prominent figure in the jazz world.
