Franco Columbu was an Italian-American bodybuilder, powerlifter, actor, and World’s Strongest Man competitor. He was born on August 7, 1941, in Ollolai, Sardinia, Italy. Columbu initially started his career as a boxer but later shifted his focus to bodybuilding after moving to the United States in the 1960s. Columbu quickly made a name for himself in the world of bodybuilding, winning numerous titles including the prestigious Mr. Olympia competition, which he won in 1976 and 1981. Standing at just 5 feet 5 inches tall, Columbu showcased a remarkable level of muscular development that defied his stature. He was known for his incredible strength and impressive feats, including lifting cars and even a refrigerator during his competitive career. Beyond bodybuilding, Columbu ventured into acting and appeared in several films, most notably in the Conan the Barbarian series alongside his close friend, Arnold Schwarzenegger. He also worked as a chiropractor, a profession he pursued after earning his doctorate in chiropractic. In addition to his success in the world of bodybuilding and acting, Columbu had a passion for powerlifting. He set numerous records in various weightlifting categories and even won the title of World’s Strongest Man in 1977. Columbu’s career was not without its challenges. In 1980, he suffered a career-threatening injury during the World’s Strongest Man competition, fracturing several of his vertebrae. However, his determination and perseverance allowed him to make a remarkable recovery and return to compete at the highest level once again. Outside of his professional achievements, Columbu was known for his warm and charismatic personality. He was well-respected in the bodybuilding community and was loved by fans worldwide for his approachability and willingness to help others achieve their fitness goals. Tragically, Franco Columbu passed away on August 30, 2019, at the age of 78, following a swimming accident in his native Sardinia. His legacy as a bodybuilding icon, strength athlete, actor, and mentor will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched and inspired throughout his remarkable career.
