Biography
Irina Nelson is a Russian singer and performer, born on December 3, 1974, in Leningrad, Russia (now known as Saint Petersburg). She gained recognition as a member of the popular pop group Tatu, which achieved international success during the early 2000s. Irina’s musical journey started at a young age when she began learning to play the piano and violin. She won several competitions and even performed at the prestigious Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. However, her real breakthrough came when she joined forces with Yulia Volkova to form the duo Tatu in 1999. Tatu quickly gained fame with their provocative image and controversial songs that dealt with themes of teenage love, rebellion, and sexuality. Their debut single Ya Soshla S Uma (All the Things She Said) catapulted them to global stardom in 2000. The song’s success led to the release of their first album, 200 Po Vstrechnoy (200 km/h in the Wrong Lane), which became a massive hit worldwide. Irina, alongside Yulia, continued to produce chart-topping hits such as Not Gonna Get Us and All About Us, further solidifying Tatu’s position as one of the most successful Russian music acts of all time. The duo also performed at notable events like the Eurovision Song Contest and collaborated with renowned producers and songwriters from around the world. After a period of immense success, tensions arose between Irina and Yulia, resulting in Irina’s departure from Tatu in 2004.
