Biography

Joan Crawford was an American film and television actress, widely regarded as one of the greatest screen legends of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Born on March 23, 1904, in San Antonio, Texas, she was named Lucille Fay LeSueur. After a troubled childhood, she began her career as a dancer in revues and later transitioned into acting. Crawford gained popularity in the 1920s and 1930s for her roles in silent and early sound films. With her striking looks and intense on-screen presence, she quickly became known for her versatility, appearing in a wide variety of genres, from melodramas to film noir. Some of her notable films during this period include Grand Hotel (1934), The Women (1939), and Mildred Pierce (1945), for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. Known for her professionalism, Crawford was a hardworking actress who cultivated an image of strength and determination. She often played resourceful and resilient women who defied societal expectations. Off-screen, she was equally driven, meticulously controlling her public image and personal life. In the 1950s, Crawford’s career experienced a decline, but she successfully transitioned into television, starring in the popular anthology series The Joan Crawford Show from 1955 to 1956. She later made a triumphant return to the big screen in the psychological horror film Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), opposite Bette Davis. The film became a cult classic and revitalized her film career. Crawford continued to work in film and television throughout the 1960s and 1970s, even as she faced personal struggles.
