Biography
Laima Vaikule, born on March 31, 1954, is a Latvian singer, actress, and television personality who has become an iconic figure in the Russian-speaking world. She was born in the small town of Dobele, Latvia, during the Soviet era. Vaikule’s passion for music blossomed at a young age. She attended Riga Choreography School, where she studied ballet and performed in various dance groups, eventually joining the Latvian ballet theater. However, her true calling was singing, and she started her music career by performing in local bands and clubs. In the late 1970s, Vaikule gained nationwide recognition after participating in the popular Soviet music festival, Song Festival, where she won several awards. This success opened many doors for her, and she released her first album, A Long Slow Embrace, in 1985. Throughout her career, Vaikule experimented with various musical genres, including pop, jazz, and ethno-pop. Her unique voice, combined with her charismatic stage presence, quickly won the hearts of audiences across the Soviet Union and beyond.
