Laverne Cox is an American actress and LGBTQ+ advocate, best known for her groundbreaking portrayal of Sophia Burset in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. She was born on May 29, 1972, in Mobile, Alabama. Cox had an early passion for the performing arts and studied dance and acting at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. She later attended Indiana University Bloomington, where she majored in acting. After graduating, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in entertainment. In 2008, Cox gained widespread recognition for her role in the independent film Predisposed. However, it was her role as Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black that brought her international fame.
