Maria Kirilenko is a former professional tennis player from Russia. She was born on January 25, 1987, in Moscow. Kirilenko started playing tennis at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the top junior players in the world. In 2002, Kirilenko turned professional and made her breakthrough on the WTA Tour in 2005. She reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, making her first big splash in the tennis world. Kirilenko’s game was characterized by her powerful groundstrokes, strong net play, and exceptional footwork. Throughout her career, Kirilenko achieved notable success in both singles and doubles. She reached a career-high singles ranking of 10 in June 2013, and a career-high doubles ranking of 5 in June 2013 as well. She captured six WTA singles titles and 12 WTA doubles titles, including the 2012 French Open mixed doubles title. Kirilenko represented Russia in numerous international competitions, including the Olympic Games. She won a bronze medal in women’s doubles at the 2012 London Olympics with her partner, Nadia Petrova. Kirilenko was known for her competitive spirit and strong work ethic, which earned her respect among her peers. In 2014, Kirilenko faced a series of injuries that affected her performance on the court. She announced her retirement from professional tennis in 2017, at the age of 30, citing persistent health issues as the primary reason.
