Biography

Marlene Dietrich was a legendary German-American actress and singer, known for her magnetic presence and androgynous style. She was born on December 27, 1901, in Berlin, Germany. Dietrich initially pursued a career in opera and theater before transitioning to the world of cinema. She gained international recognition for her breakthrough role as Lola-Lola in the 1930 film The Blue Angel. This film catapulted her to stardom and marked the beginning of her long and successful career. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Dietrich starred in numerous notable films, including Morocco, Shanghai Express, and Destry Rides Again. She quickly became known for her sultry voice, smoky eyes, and iconic fashion sense, which often featured tailored suits and trademark fedora hats. In addition to her acting talents, Dietrich was an accomplished singer. She recorded numerous popular songs, including the classic Falling in Love Again, which became her signature tune. She frequently performed for Allied troops during World War II, showing her support for the war effort. Dietrich’s career took an additional turn when she became a vehement anti-Nazi activist. She renounced her German citizenship in 1939 and became an American citizen in 1937. Throughout her life, she used her fame and platform to denounce fascism and support democracy and human rights. In later years, Dietrich continued to perform on stage and screen, as well as releasing several successful albums. She received numerous honors for her contributions to the entertainment industry and activism, including the Medal of Freedom from the United States and the Legion of Honor from France. Marlene Dietrich passed away on May 6, 1992, at the age of 90 in Paris, France.
