Biography

Wilhelmina Cooper was a Dutch-American model and businesswoman, born on May 1, 1939, in Culemborg, Netherlands. She began her career in the fashion industry as a model but eventually transitioned into becoming one of the most influential figures in the business. Cooper’s natural beauty and grace quickly caught the attention of prominent fashion photographers and designers in Europe. In 1957, she made her debut on the cover of Vogue magazine, marking the beginning of a successful modeling career. Known for her striking features, including her signature bee-stung lips and an incredible sense of style, Cooper became a muse for renowned fashion houses such as Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. However, Cooper’s ambitions extended beyond just modeling. In 1967, she founded Wilhelmina Models, a modeling agency based in New York City. The agency quickly gained recognition and became one of the most prestigious and sought-after in the industry. Cooper’s keen eye for talent and her commitment to professionalism helped launch the careers of many famous models, including Naomi Campbell, Beverly Johnson, and Iman. Throughout her career, Wilhelmina Cooper revolutionized the modeling industry by changing the perception of models as mere props to influential businesswomen. She introduced a new approach to managing models, emphasizing their individuality, and negotiating fairer contracts on their behalf. Cooper’s business acumen led to the expansion of her agency, which also represented actors, musicians, and other entertainers. Unfortunately, Cooper’s vibrant and influential career was cut short when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She fought bravely against the disease but tragically passed away on March 1, 1980, in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the age of 40. Wilhelmina Cooper’s legacy continues to live on in the fashion and modeling industry. Her groundbreaking work as a model and her pioneering efforts as a businesswoman have left an indelible mark. Today, Wilhelmina Models remains one of the top modeling agencies worldwide, symbolizing her lasting impact on the world of fashion and serving as a testament to her enduring influence.
