M.I.A., born Mathangi Arulpragasam on July 18, 1975, is a renowned British rapper, singer, and songwriter of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage. She gained international recognition for her genre-blending music that fuses elements of hip-hop, electronic, and world music. Arulpragasam was born in Hounslow, London, to Tamil activist parents who had sought refuge in the UK during the Sri Lankan Civil War. Growing up amidst political turmoil and cultural displacement, M.I.A. developed a keen sense of social justice, which later became a recurring theme in her music. In her early years, M.I.A. explored visual arts and completed her education in fine art, film, and video at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. However, her true passion for music soon took over, leading her to experiment with various sounds and samples that captured the diverse cultural influences she experienced in her life. M.I.A.’s breakthrough came with her debut studio album, Arular, released in 2005.
