Mo’Nique, born as Monique Angela Hicks on December 11, 1967, is an American actress, comedian, and author. She was raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and began her journey in entertainment as a stand-up comedian. Mo’Nique first gained recognition for her bold, unapologetic comedic style, often focusing on issues of race, gender, and weight. Her comedic talent led her to various appearances on shows like Def Comedy Jam and Showtime at the Apollo. She quickly became renowned for her mastery of improvisation and her ability to connect with audiences through her relatable sense of humor. In 1999, Mo’Nique made her debut in film with the critically acclaimed drama In Too Deep, which showcased her versatility as an actress. However, it was her breakout role as the abusive and manipulative mother, Mary Lee Johnston, in the 2009 film Precious that earned her widespread acclaim.
