Biography
Pete Sampras is an American former professional tennis player, widely regarded as one of the greatest in the sport’s history. He was born on August 12, 1971, in Washington D.C., to Greek immigrant parents. Sampras showed an early talent for tennis, and his impressive skills led him to turn professional at the age of 16. Throughout his career, Sampras dominated the sport, particularly on grass courts and indoor hard courts. He possessed a powerful serving and volleying ability, making him virtually unstoppable on fast surfaces. His exceptional game allowed him to win a total of 14 Grand Slam singles titles, a record he held for several years before being surpassed by Roger Federer and later by Rafael Nadal. Sampras’ most successful period came during the 1990s when he clinched his first major title at the US Open in 1990. He continued to excel in subsequent years, winning seven Wimbledon titles, two Australian Open titles, and a record-setting five consecutive US Open titles from 1993 to 1998. Sampras’ remarkable run propelled him to the World No.1 ranking, which he held for a total of 286 weeks, another record he held until Federer surpassed it. Known for his focused and composed demeanor on the court, Sampras displayed remarkable mental resilience and composure during his matches. He had rivalries with other tennis greats of his era, most notably Andre Agassi, with whom he shared numerous memorable duels. Their contrasting styles and personalities added to the excitement whenever they faced off. In 2003, at the age of 31, Sampras announced his retirement from professional tennis. He concluded his career on a high note, winning the US Open that year and leaving a lasting legacy in the sport. He married the American actress Bridgette Wilson in 2000, and they have two sons together.
